and the winner is......
aww come on. you didn't think it was going to be that easy did you?
months ago when blogger was being a pain in the neck more often than not, i set out to test drive other free blog services to see if it truly was the best one out there. i ended up with 7 blogs outside of my blogger relm. Ebloggy, tblog, blogigo, blogeasy, blogthing, modblog, and typepad*. we'll discuss them in that order and rate them on a 5 C system with a lower case c indicating 1/2. keep in mind these are just the opinions of a single mom with WAY too much time on her hands some nights.
ebloggy:
premade templates: CCC
User friendliness: CC
Host stability: CCC
Ads: Yes
i wasn't terribly impressed with this site. sure if you're not into the aesthetic aspect of a blog, it's fine. it's workable once you get use to it. however as a new user or even a user that had left it unattended for any length of time, i found myself searching for simple things...like the add a post button. to me that's not something i feel i should have to "look" for.

i was unable to complete my research on this site due to host issues...that should speak volumes.

this is actually a UK site if i remember correctly. i couldn't login today to refresh my memory. i seem to recall that intially i was impressed. too bad we'll never know for sure.
blogeasy:
premade templates: C
User friendliness: Cc
Host stability: CCCC
Ads: Yes
the words you get what you pay for come to mind. Ads fill my sidebar and footer space. you can customize the template...sort of...almost...but not quite really.
modblog:

user friendliness: CCC
host stability: CCCc
Ads: No
if i were to leave blogger for another "free" service listed here today, modblog would be it. enough said.
typepad*:
premade templates: CCCC
user friendliness: CCCCC
host stability: CCCC
Ads: No
typepad was by far my favorite host site. if blogger starts giving me fits again** you'll find me over there with the rest of the cool kids. my typepad experience was problem free. they would have recieved a perfect score in the host stability ranking but i had to count off due to time limits.
*typepad is not a free site but does offer a 30 day freee trial.
**while blogger was the instigator of the fits i've had of late, most of them were due to user error. shocking i know. ¶ 8:48 AM 0 comments
